Renting a Golf Cart (Really an LSV) on Florida's Gulf Coast: Rates, Rules, Insurance
What rental companies require, what it costs by town as of October 2026, and the rules you, not the company, get ticketed for.
The first thing to know is that you are almost certainly not renting a golf cart. You are renting an LSV (low-speed vehicle: the tagged, titled, insured kind that every rental company on this coast actually rents). That matters because the two vehicles follow different rules, and the rules that apply to you are the LSV rules: streets posted 35 mph or less, a licensed driver, belts for everyone, car seats for small children. The full legal picture is in the golf cart vs LSV guide.
Holmes Beach bans the rental of untagged golf carts to visitors outright. Captiva requires rental carts to carry a company identifier and a warning sticker under a Lee County ordinance. Everywhere else, the market has settled on LSVs because they are the only thing a visitor can legally drive on most streets.
What operators ask for
Requirements vary by company, but the pattern across the operator pages we read is consistent:
- A driver aged 21 or over; some companies set 25.
- A valid driver licence for every person who will drive, with all drivers named on the contract.
- Proof of your own personal auto insurance. Rental operators state that the renter’s own auto policy is primary. Rental insurance does not replace it.
- A credit-card deposit.
- An optional damage waiver, typically covering roughly the first $300 of damage.
- Some operators refuse children under 4, and most refuse pets.
Ask about range before you book. Rental operators report electric LSVs cover roughly 40 to 60 miles on a charge and gas models 100 to 150 miles on a tank. Condo complexes may have nowhere to charge. If you are on a multi-day rental in an electric cart, find out where the charger will go before you pay.
Rate snapshot by town
These are operator-published figures as of October 2026, rounded. They move with the season and many island operators list “price on request” for peak weeks. Treat them as a sense of scale, not a quote.
| Town | Published rates, as of October 2026, operator-published | Notes operators publish |
|---|---|---|
| Siesta Key | 4 hr about $150; 24 hr about $195 to $225; 3 days about $550; week about $750 | 21+ or 25+, licence, auto-insurance card, no children under 4, no pets |
| St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island | About $75 to $85 per day with a 3-day minimum; about $595 to $695 per week for a lithium 4-seater | Some firms charge about $100 delivery under 5 days; 5-day minimum on Treasure Island from some firms |
| Venice | About $85 to $200 per day, 4-seat vs 6-seat | Most require 21+ and a licence; 18 operators list Venice coverage |
| Boca Grande | About $90 to $180 per day, 4-seat vs 6-seat | Island shops plus delivery from the mainland |
| Englewood and Manasota Key | Within the same $85 to $200 range; delivery from North Port | Gas LSVs reported hard to find locally |
| Anna Maria Island | Not published in the pages we read | Rental LSVs carry a city decal listing the rules |
| Sanibel and Captiva | Not published in the pages we read | 21+ for every driver; free delivery on multi-day rentals |
| Longboat Key | No on-island operators found | AMI and Sarasota firms deliver |
| Dunedin and Clearwater | Not published in the pages we read | Clearwater Beach regulates for-hire LSVs under a 2012 ordinance |
| Sun City Center | Not a rental market | Resident-owned carts |
Peak season runs February through April. Expect multi-day minimums on the islands and book early.

The rules you get ticketed for
Police on Anna Maria Island have said it plainly: the driver receives the citation, not the rental company. The same holds everywhere on this coast. The rules below are repeated by operators and by police, and the contract usually says a breach ends the rental, with GPS tracking to prove it.
- No bridges unless both the operator and the posted limit allow it. Most bridges and causeways on this coast are posted above 35 mph and are closed to LSVs.
- No beach, no sand, no dunes.
- No sidewalks, bike lanes, bike paths or multi-use trails. Do not pull into the bike lane to let cars pass.
- Seat belts on everyone, every trip.
- A proper child seat for small children. Operators require 5-point seats and no lap children. On Anna Maria Island the sheriff’s office wrote 15 citations and 37 warnings for child-restraint violations in a single August.
- Never more people than seats.
- Return the cart charged or fuelled.
Rental maps are not the law
Rental-company misinformation is a documented problem. The Anna Maria Island elected-officials coalition flagged a company FAQ that wrongly told renters they could cross the bridges. A driver stopped on Longboat Key in 2024 told police the rental company had not said the road was off-limits. Neither excuse helps when the ticket is written.
Before you drive off, read the town page for where you are staying. Each one lists which roads are above 35 mph, which bridges are closed, and what the local police watch for. The ones with the most confusion are Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key and Siesta Key.
A short checklist before you sign
- Confirm the vehicle has a licence plate. If it does not, it is an untagged golf cart and you cannot legally drive it on most public streets as a visitor.
- Bring your licence and your auto-insurance card.
- Ask what the contract says about bridges, beaches and the geofence.
- Ask where you will charge it.
- Count the seats and the children.
- Check the lights, belts and mirrors work before you leave the lot. If a belt is missing, ask for a different cart.
If you are thinking about buying rather than renting after a week on the island, read buying a used golf cart near the coast first, especially the note on ex-rental carts.
