Boca Grande by Golf Cart: Bike Path Rules, Village Streets and What Is Off-Limits

Cart life here runs on the 6.5-mile bike path and the village streets, but the path permission is a community rule, and Lee County posted no-golf-cart signs on some stretches in 2024.

Plain golf cart (no tag)

Limited

Electric carts on the GICIA bike path under a community rule, not an ordinance. No county street designation found; county signs ban carts on some stretches.

LSV (tagged, titled, insured)

Yes

Legal on island roads posted 35 mph or less; no county LSV ban found. We did not verify postings on Gasparilla Road or the causeway, so read the signs.

The short version

Boca Grande feels like a golf cart town, and most of that life happens on the 6.5-mile Boca Grande Bike Path and the slow village streets. The path permission is a rule set by the nonprofit that runs the path, not an ordinance, and we found no Lee County or Charlotte County designation of any Gasparilla Island street for golf carts. In 2024 the Lee County Sheriff’s Office put up signs reminding drivers that carts are banned on certain stretches. An LSV (low-speed vehicle: the tagged, titled, insured kind that every rental company on this coast actually rents) may use any road posted 35 mph or less under state law, which is why the rental fleets are LSVs. The thing most people get wrong is assuming the bike path rule comes from the state. It does not. Start with golf cart vs LSV under Florida law if the distinction is new.

Who makes the rules here

Gasparilla Island is split between two counties. The village and the southern part are in Lee County; the north end is in Charlotte County. Which rules apply depends on which county the road is in; a local blog is the only source we found that spells this out, so check the county line on a map.

Under s. 316.212 a golf cart may use a public street only where the county has designated that street and posted signs. Lee County has done this elsewhere: its golf cart ordinances cover Captiva (ordinances 09-22 and 23-07) and Pine Island (ordinance 13-08). We found none for Gasparilla Island. A state bill in 2000 (SB 1818 / HB 1545, “Lee and Charlotte Counties/Golf Carts”) would have authorised carts on the island’s cart path with a minimum age of 16; it died in messages on 5 May 2000.

Gasparilla Island State Park sits at the south end. Carts on state park roads need Department of Environmental Protection authorisation under s. 316.212(4), and we found none. We also found nothing permitting cart operation on the causeway and toll bridge.

Plain golf carts

On the bike path, the rules published by local real-estate and rental sites are these: electric carts may use the path, gas carts may not; 15 mph maximum; yield to every other path user; yield to road traffic at crossings; the separate jogging path is for pedestrians only; and headlights and taillights after dark. The same pages say drivers under 14 may not operate a cart. That line is out of date. Since 1 October 2023, anyone under 18 driving a golf cart on a public road needs a learner’s permit or driver licence, and anyone 18 and over must carry government photo ID. The stricter rule controls.

These are community rules. The path is a 6.5-mile asphalt route from the north end behind 5800 Gasparilla Road, along Gasparilla Road, through downtown at 1st Street and south on Gulf Boulevard to Belcher Road, and it is operated by the Gasparilla Island Conservation and Improvement Association (GICIA). We could not find the cart permission in any ordinance, so treat it as the GICIA’s custom, honoured locally, rather than a legal designation.

On the streets, the picture is thinner. Residents drive carts on the village grid by long habit, but we found no county ordinance designating those streets. On 12 September 2024 the Boca Beacon reported that Lt. Mike Sawicki of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office had new signs installed, around late August 2024, reminding drivers that golf carts are banned from certain stretches of the island starting at the Lee County line. Which stretches is behind the paper’s paywall, so we cannot list them. Gasparilla Road north of the village carries fast traffic and is the obvious candidate. Read the signs; where a sign says no golf carts, the matter is settled.

LSVs

An LSV may use any road posted 35 mph or less and may cross a faster road at an intersection (s. 316.2122). It must be titled, registered and insured, and the driver must hold a valid driver licence. We found no Lee or Charlotte county order banning LSVs from island roads, which either county may issue under s. 316.2122(3).

Florida seat-belt and child-restraint law applies in an LSV. Belt everyone, put small children in a proper seat, and do not carry more people than there are seats. The driver, not the rental company, receives any citation.

We did not verify posted limits on Gasparilla Road, Gulf Boulevard or the causeway. Verify on site.

Bridges and getting on and off the island

We found nothing permitting plain golf cart operation on the causeway and toll bridge, and for an LSV the posted limit decides, which we did not verify. Island operators and Caddy Carts from North Port deliver, which avoids the question for most visitors. If you own a cart on the mainland, ask the Lee County Sheriff’s Office before you try the bridge.

Renting here

Operators on or serving the island include Boca Grande Cart Rental (430 E Railroad Street), Dolphin Cove (471 Park Avenue), Gasparilla Adventures (333 Park Avenue), Thoroughbred in Placida, and Caddy Carts from North Port with free delivery. Published day rates ran roughly $90 to $180 as of October 2026 for four- and six-seat LSVs, as listed by a local real-estate guide and a booking site. Expect a 21-and-over rule, a licence check and proof of your own auto insurance. Read the contract for bridge and path terms; the driver gets the ticket. GolfCartNearMe lists rental companies by town at golfcartnearme.com, and our renting guide covers what operators enforce.

Parking, paths and the beach

Park an LSV in a car space. On the bike path, keep to 15 mph and stay off the jogging path. No carts on the beach, in the dunes or inside the state park. The village is a historic district; local guidance asks for low noise, so leave the speaker at home. Salt spray reaches every cart here daily; see the salt-air care routine.

What we could not confirm

  • Which stretches of the island the 2024 Lee County Sheriff signs cover (Boca Beacon paywall). Drive the route and read the signs, or ask the Sheriff’s non-emergency line.
  • Whether Lee County or Charlotte County has designated any Gasparilla Island street for golf carts. None found; ask each county.
  • Whether the GICIA’s current posted path rules match the real-estate and rental summaries above. Ask the GICIA.
  • Posted speed limits on Gasparilla Road, Gulf Boulevard and the causeway.
  • Any Lee or Charlotte county ordinance number for Boca Grande. None exists that we could find.
