Golf Carts in Englewood and on Manasota Key: Two Counties, One Beach Road

Manasota Key straddles Sarasota and Charlotte counties. We found no golf cart designation on either side, so a tagged LSV on roads posted 35 mph or less is the practical answer.

Plain golf cart (no tag)

Not confirmed

No county designation found for any Manasota Key or Englewood road, on either side of the county line. Treat plain golf carts as not permitted on public roads.

LSV (tagged, titled, insured)

Yes

Legal on roads posted 35 mph or less under state law. SR 776 is a state road and Beach Road a county road; check the posted limit before you cross a bridge.

The short version

We found no Sarasota County or Charlotte County ordinance designating any road in Englewood or on Manasota Key for golf carts. Until one of the two counties confirms a designation, treat a plain golf cart as not permitted on public roads here. An LSV (low-speed vehicle: the tagged, titled, insured kind that every rental company on this coast actually rents) is a different case. State law lets an LSV use any street posted 35 mph or less, and that is what the rental companies serving Englewood deliver. The thing most people get wrong is treating the key as one place with one rule. It is two counties, and the line runs across the island. If the two categories are new to you, start with golf cart vs LSV under Florida law.

Who makes the rules here

Manasota Key is a barrier island split between two counties. The southern part, Englewood Beach, is a census-designated place in Charlotte County, so there is no city hall; the county commission is the road authority. The northern part, Manasota Beach, is in Sarasota County and continues north as Caspersen Beach toward Venice. Beach Road crosses Lemon Bay to connect the key to Englewood on the mainland.

Under s. 316.212 a golf cart may only use a county road or municipal street that the local government has designated as safe for carts and signed. A county can also adopt stricter rules than the state. Neither county appears to have done either for this area.

Two roads matter for the state-versus-local question. SR 776 (Englewood Road, Indiana Avenue) is a state road, which puts it off-limits to plain golf carts except at an FDOT-approved crossing, and open to LSVs only where it is posted 35 mph or less. Beach Road is CR 776, a county road, and a search listing we did not open names the Tom Adams Bridge as part of CR 776. A county road that has not been designated is still closed to plain golf carts.

Plain golf carts

We looked for a designation by Sarasota County and by Charlotte County and found none. That does not prove no designation exists, but it means you should not assume one does. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has published a Nextdoor post titled “Golf Cart Use on Public Roadways”. The post blocks automated reading and we could not open it, so we cannot tell you what it says. Read it yourself, or call the Sheriff’s non-emergency line and ask whether any Englewood or Manasota Key road is designated.

If a designation does turn up, the state baseline still applies: sunrise to sunset unless the county has permitted night use and the cart has headlights, brake lights, turn signals and a windshield; working brakes, steering, tyres, a rear-view mirror and red reflectors front and rear; a learner’s permit or driver licence for anyone under 18, and government photo ID for anyone 18 and over.

Gated communities around Englewood, Boca Royale and Rotonda among them, set their own internal cart rules. Those rules stop at the gate. The moment a cart turns onto a public road, the county’s position is what counts, and right now we cannot point to a county position that allows it.

LSVs

An LSV may use any street posted 35 mph or less and may cross a faster road at an intersection (s. 316.2122). It must be registered, insured and titled, and the driver must hold a valid driver licence. Local operators serving Englewood rent LSVs on exactly those terms.

Because an LSV is a motor vehicle, Florida seat-belt and child-restraint law applies to everyone in it. Belt every seat, put small children in a proper seat, and do not carry more people than there are seating positions. If a deputy stops a rental, the driver gets the citation, not the rental company.

Posted limits are the open question on this stretch of coast. We did not verify the limit on Beach Road, the Lemon Bay bridge or SR 776. Read the sign before you turn.

Bridges and getting on and off the island

Beach Road carries you from Englewood over Lemon Bay to Englewood Beach. It is a county road (CR 776), not a state road, but that only matters for an LSV, where the posted limit decides. For a plain golf cart an undesignated county road is as closed as a state road. If you are renting, ask the operator which bridges their contract allows and look at the posted limit yourself; the operator’s map is not a legal document.

Caddy Carts, based in North Port, delivers to Englewood, Boca Grande, Venice, Wellen Park and North Port. Its published terms as of October 2026: LSVs for roads posted 35 mph or less, and a valid driver licence for every driver. A 2024 TripAdvisor post says gas LSV rentals are hard to find locally, so ask about range if you plan a long day; electric LSVs typically cover far less distance than gas ones, and your condo may have no charger.

Published day rates for the Venice, Englewood and Boca Grande area ran roughly $85 to $203 as of October 2026, depending on four- or six-seat, with many operators quoting price on request. Expect to show a licence, be at least 21, and have your own auto insurance in force; the rental agreement normally makes your policy primary. The driver, not the company, receives any ticket. GolfCartNearMe lists rental companies by town at golfcartnearme.com, and our renting guide covers deposits, waivers and the rules operators enforce.

Parking, paths and the beach

Park an LSV in a marked car space and pay whatever a car would pay. Do not drive on sidewalks, bike lanes, multi-use paths or the sand; no beach town on this coast allows cart traffic on the beach, and dune areas are protected. After a day near the water, rinse the underside; our salt-air care routine explains why that matters more here than inland.
